only a third of households signed up and they will extend the deadline

The Government made the determination to extend the registration period due to the number of households that signed up. As of the latest data on Monday 25, had completed 5,081,191 households since 07/15. The majority remained in rate 2, that is, they will maintain the subsidies for having low income: there are 2,779,155 households. In second place, there are 2,089,862 left in rate 3that is, they have average income and at the moment they maintain the subsidies.

So in total, almost 5 million households maintain the subsidies. In the country there are 17 million users with electricity, and 9 million with gas. At the Ministry of Energy, they expected that at least 10 million households would sign up. “If you close 5 million homes, almost 70% are left out, and in such a high percentage there are many people who are going to need it,” an official source said. Most calls to 0800 or queries to Anses are from people who did not sign up. For example, those who have ID numbers ending in 0, 1 and 2, had four days to register from the moment the registry was enabled. In person at Anses, the inscriptions were low: 200 thousand shifts were granted.

In rate 1, which means that they have high incomes, so will lose the subsidy, 212,174 households were registered. From the Government they consider that many families, knowing that they exceeded the income of 3.5 basic baskets, decided not to sign up. In any case, the official recommendation is that they do so, beyond the fact that today they exceed their income: they anticipate that they could have the subsidy again in the event that their personal situation changes, such as if their salary falls below the inflation.

With less than 5 million households that maintain the subsidy, they are far from the estimates of the former Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, who promoted this scheme. “Guzmán’s team thought that 10% lost subsidies, it could be more, but we are very far with 30% of households.”

As those who will no longer have subsidies will have a rate increase of more than 200% in three stages, until the end of 2022, the Government wants to minimize the margin of error. For this reason, there were meetings between the Secretary of Energy, Anses, provincial governments and different ministries to analyze that 5 million users massively enter the registry so that they maintain the subsidy. They are retirees from the minimum, holders of AUH, residents of popular neighborhoods, homes where dining rooms operate, among others. For now, they will continue to insist that they be registered in the registry, since they may have a social benefit, but have the services in the name of another person.
