The World Bank approved a financing of US0 million for Argentina

Prior to this meeting, Batakis met for the first time with the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Gerogieva, at the headquarters of the multilateral organization, in Washington.

In turn, the confirmation of the World Bank loan came on the same day that the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, announced that he cannot grant new financing to Argentina due to factors that include the “lack of financial transparency and integrity.”

The official affirmed that he could not “give the go-ahead” to new funds for Argentina, which was awaiting the disbursement of some US$500 million for infrastructure works.

“It is up to the multilateral institutions to adopt the highest standards of financial integrity and transparency and help their member countries to do so as well,” Claver-Carone justified in a column published in The Wall Street Journal.

After meeting in the morning with Janet Yellen’s adviser, David Lipton, Batakis went by car to the headquarters of the international organization, accompanied by the Argentine ambassador, Jorge Argüello; the Vice Minister of Economy, Karina Angeletti, and the head of the Chancellery of the Argentine Embassy in the United States, Adrián Nador.

It was the first meeting that Batakis and Georgieva had after the virtual contact of last July 6, after the minister was sworn in as the new head of the Treasury Palace.

The meeting was part of Batakis’s trip to the United States, which has among its main objectives that its interlocutors “listen and find out how the new official thinks”, in addition to exposing the action guidelines that the Argentine Government will take in economic matters.
