The regional government of the Azores will support the purchase of maize and sorghum seeds worth about 2.7 million euros, financed by its own funds and European funds, was published this Friday in Diário da República.

“The budgetary support limit is 2,670,000 euros, with a financing component of the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGF) of 890,000 euros and with a financing component of the Autonomous Region of the Azores within the budget. Autonomous Region of the Azores (ORAA) for 2022 in the amount of 1,780,000 euros,” the regional regulation says.

The diploma goes into effect on Saturday and Azorean farmers have 15 working days to apply.

On July 13, the regional secretary for agriculture and rural development of the Azores, António Ventura, already announced that the amount allocated to the region from the crisis reserve activated by the European Commission to mitigate the increase in production factors in agriculture. will be used for the purchase of corn and sorghum seeds, for the production of feed or corn grain.

The Azorean executive will provide support corresponding to “80% of the eligible seed purchase amount” up to a limit of €218 per hectare in the case of corn and €110 per hectare in the case of sorghum.

If the total amount of requests for support exceeds funding from the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund, the Azores Executive will apply to the budget of the region.

If the total amount provided for in the diploma is exceeded, the “proportion applicable to all applicants” will apply.

This support can be used by farmers with farms in the Azores “who buy maize or sorghum seeds to grow in 2022” and who have submitted requests to “Ajuda aos Produtores de Culturas Arvenses” under the program. Specific Options for Addressing Remoteness and Isolation (POSEI) related to 2022.

In the case of corn, acquisition is supported “up to a maximum density of 90,000 seeds per hectare”, and in the case of sorghum, up to “a maximum density of 70 kg per hectare”.

Farmers must submit invoices for the purchase of seeds dated between January 1 and June 15, 2022.
