Pioneer in the Alps: bed stop for South Tyrol

South Tyrol is the first Alpine region to pull the emergency brake against too many tourists. After a long tug-of-war, the state parliament in Bolzano decided on an upper limit for holiday beds. This is based on the status of 2019 and is limited to 229,088 beds.

Not only hotels, inns and guesthouses are affected, but also private room renters and providers of Airbnb apartments. “Holiday on the farm” was an exception to this at the last moment.

In South Tyrol there has long been a debate about how tourism can be made more environmentally friendly. In the autonomous region, the governing parties South Tyrolean People’s Party and Lega as well as the opposition Greens and PD (Partito Democratico) pulled together for the bed stop. Acquired building rights may still be realized. That brings 10,000 additional beds. Municipalities will no longer be allowed to approve new beds from next week. In Austria, a loose agreement was reached in Tyrol on an upper limit of 300 beds per establishment. However, this is not legally binding.
