Lego is the epitome of meaningful toys, but the manufacturer has a problem. Because the material from which the cult blocks are made has fallen into disrepute: plastic. Finding alternatives is proving difficult.
There are many heroes in the big, colorful Lego kingdom: Luke Skywalker, Catwoman, Harry Potter, Super Mario, Batman – as plastic figures they are in children’s rooms all over the world and experience fantastic adventures there with their little owners.
And then there’s Tim Brooks, who they say at the toymaker’s headquarters could also become “a real Lego hero”: a slight, friendly Englishman with thick-rimmed glasses and a thin goatee. Brooks is responsible for sustainability at the Danish company, and his role is perhaps the greatest adventure Lego has to offer right now. He says: “What we are planning is ambitious. It’s a bit like the moon landing.”
