For regular 95 petrol, the average realized price (PMV) without taxes in the EU-27 increased by 22.8 cents/l from the first to the second quarter of 2022, while in Portugal the PMV without taxes is 0.9 cents/l higher . than in Spain.

However, “the tax burden applied in Portugal (44%) contributed to a reduction in price competitiveness in the context of the Iberian Peninsula”.

For gasoline, according to ERSE, “National PMVs are higher than the EU27 average, ranking seventh among the highest priced countries.”

For regular diesel, the EU27 tax-free LMA increased by 25.5 cents/liter from the first to the second quarter of 2022.

“Without taxes, average national prices are 1.6 cents/liter lower than in the neighboring country. However, the tax burden in Portugal (38%) was slightly higher than in Spain (37%), which justified the practice of similar PMVs,” the regulator notes.

Thus, also for diesel, “the national PMV was above the EU-27 averages, giving Portugal 12th place in terms of highest prices. Without taxes, the position of Portugal in the EU-27 ranking is maintained.”
