According to INE, the chain decline in the number of the active population “occurred due to a decrease in the employed population by 16.7 thousand (0.3%) with an increase in the number of unemployed by 3.0 thousand (1.0%)”.
The increase in the working-age population (8.0 thousand; 0.2%) compared to June 2021 “was accompanied by an increase in the number of employed people (38.3 thousand; 0.8%), which more than compensated for the decrease in the number of unemployed population (30.4 thousand; 8.8%)”.
According to INE, “Despite the decline seen in June 2022, the active population remains close to its 10-year high recorded in December 2021 (5,193.6 thousand people).”
The employed population (4,855.5 thousand) in June decreased by 0.3% compared to the previous month and increased by 0.8% compared to the same month in 2021, while the unemployed population (313.7 thousand) increased compared to the previous month (1.0%) and decreased. compared to June 2021 (8.8%).
As for the inactive population (2,490.9 thousand), in June there was an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous month and a decrease of 1.0% compared to the previous year.
In March this year, the lowest value since February 1998 of the inactive population (2469.3 thousand people) was recorded, and the employment rate reached the highest value in the last 10 years (63.8%).
The INE data also shows that the labor underutilization rate was 11.6%, up 0.1 percentage point from the previous month but 0.9 percentage point lower than the same month in 2021.
