The National Statistical Institute (INE) published this Friday the first brief assessment of the dynamics of gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of the year.
In the first three months of the year, the Portuguese economy grew by 11.9% year on year and 2.6% year on year.
In the second quarter of 2021, GDP increased by 16.5% year on year and 4.4% year on year.
According to economists surveyed by Lusa, the growth of the Portuguese economy should have slowed in the second quarter of this year on an annualized basis compared to the growth recorded in the first three months of the year, ranging between 6.3% and 11.9%.
Most pessimistic is NECEP’s Católica-Lisbon Forecasting Lab forecast, which points to 6.3% year-on-year growth and 0.8% chain contraction.
BPI economists estimate 7.5% year-on-year growth and 0.3% chain, while economists from Santander, Portugal, point to 8.6% year-on-year growth and about 1.3% chain.
In turn, Paulo Rosa, senior economist at Banco Carregosa, believes that GDP in the second quarter of this year should slow down year-on-year and be below the 11.9% recorded in the first quarter, suggesting that chain growth “is above 2.6% ” is “doable”.
For the full year, the Government expects growth of 4.9%.
