Brazil confirms country’s first death from monkeypox

Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced this Friday the first death in the country from monkeypox, the number of new cases of which has skyrocketed in the past seven days and increased in 15 of Brazil’s 27 states. Death occurred this Thursday, but the cause was officially confirmed only this Friday.

According to preliminary information provided by the Ministry of Health, the first lethal victim of the disease in the country was a man who had health problems and low immunity. He lived in Uberlandia, a city in the hinterland of the state of Minas Gerais, with the third highest number of cases in Brazil.

Brazil has now confirmed 1,066 cases of monkeypox, 75% of which have been reported in the last seven days, according to official figures compiled up to this Friday. Sao Paulo, the most populous state, is also the state with the most infections, with 823, followed by Rio de Janeiro (124) and Minas Gerais (44).

In São Paulo, in addition to the already confirmed cases in adults, the disease also affected three children. They are 4 to 6 years old and have mild symptoms of the disease.

Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, who has already been accused in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic of denying and supporting Jair Bolsonaro’s delusional positions on Covid-19, is again accused of doing nothing to combat monkeypox. . The Ministry of Health responds that it is closely monitoring the evolution of the outbreak and is already negotiating the purchase of 50,000 doses of vaccine against the disease.
