The future of the ocean and marine life depends on each of us. Every year, about 11 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean, which is equivalent to garbage truck every minute. Underwater debris is the least visible to the naked eye, but it exists in abundance in our rivers, seas and oceans and directly affects the marine ecosystem, water quality and marine biodiversity.
There are small initiatives that can make a big difference to the planet. Pingo Doce, a reference company in the national retail industry, in partnership with Sailors for the sea Portugallaunched Program “Love for the sea”.to raise awareness among the Portuguese of the unprecedented action from the north to the south of the country.
“Cleaning the bottom of the sea” is pioneering initiative in Portugal which aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our sea through ocean literacy and coastal and underwater cleanup on ten beaches along the Portuguese coast.
From Praia da Lesa da Palmeira in Porto to Praia de Monte Gordo in the Algarve, a team of certified divers will collect waste and debris left on the seabed with the aim of combating marine pollution and raising awareness of the importance of ocean conservation . At the same time, they will be additionally dynamized beach cleanup activities and dynamics on the sand for the little ones, with surprises and educational activities dedicated to ocean literacy.

Of course, it is difficult, because it is small garbage, but we managed,” says one of the children who took part in the launch of the initiative in Lech. yes Palmeira, Porto.
Over the next few weeks, Pingo Doche and Sailors for the sea Portugal, float across the sea and land on the southern beaches.

“In addition to striving to learn from best practices and work daily to reduce our ecological footprint, we believe it is important to engage the community, starting with the younger generation, to give them access to the information and resources they need so they can participate in this important and urgent mission to conserve the ocean and marine species,” explains Philipa Pimentel, Director of Sustainability and Local Impact at Pingo Doce.
All vacationers, families, schoolchildren in the regions where the cleaning will take place, and even water sports enthusiasts are invited to learn more about the problem of garbage and waste that ends up on the ocean floor and how adopt more responsible and sustainable habits and behaviors help mitigate it.
“Promoting greater awareness and ability to take the most responsible action to protect the oceans and marine resources is one of the main thrusts of the mission Sailors for the sea Portugal. After a period of pandemic when awareness-raising activities have been drastically reduced, we are very pleased to join this Pingo Doce initiative and contribute to the fight against marine pollution,” says Bernardo Correa de Barros, President Sailors for the sea Portugal.
All actions will take into account the collected garbage and waste, and your data will be entered into the international platform. pure wave gives ocean conservation and on the platform about the projectto characterize these same wastes and to contribute to the construction of national scientific data on wastes dispersed in the environment.
To love the sea is everyone’s duty
