Employment barometer: Ifo survey: upswing on the labor market continues

More companies are looking for employees again. But the mood is only good in individual sectors. The hospitality industry is still reluctant.

According to a survey, German companies are becoming more active again in their search for employees. The Ifo employment barometer rose to 103.6 points in August, an increase of 1.2 points compared to the previous month. The upswing on the labor market is continuing, according to the Ifo Institute.

The Ifo asks companies every month whether the number of their employees will increase, remain the same or will decrease over the next three months. If the negative reviews predominate, the barometer will drop compared to the previous month.

In the manufacturing industry, the employment barometer has given way, it said. Nevertheless, companies in the electrical and mechanical engineering industries in particular continued to plan to increase their workforce. Despite a slight decline in the barometer, retail is also still looking for new employees.

There is therefore a slightly positive trend in the construction industry. In the case of service providers, the sharp decline in the barometer was partially made up for in July, but there is reluctance in the hospitality industry due to the rising number of corona infections.
