Zero advocates for less light on monuments or indoor stores to save energy

Reducing the use of street lighting and turning off the lighting of monuments, as well as reducing the lighting in stores after closing, are proposals by the environmental association Zero, which claim that they contribute to sustainability and energy autonomy in Portugal.

The measures, always protecting safety issues, are part of a list of proposals released today in a statement that Zero considers fundamental to energy savings in Portugal and that must be applied regardless of the situation.

Other ways to save energy, according to the proposals, include adapting the temperature inside buildings (18/19ºC in winter and 25/26ºC in summer), wearing seasonal clothing, and “active climate control”, penalizing establishments, for example. who use air conditioning with doors and windows open to the street.

Another way to save energy is to encourage the use of public transport by local authorities and the government and make it more attractive. Promoting remote work and meetings digitally also saves energy, Zero says, as does slowing down the car.

In the statement, the association also proposes other more structural measures, such as accelerating initiatives to restore buildings to be more thermally comfortable, as well as encouraging other measures to improve that thermal comfort and sealing initiatives.

Accelerating the installation of solar hot water systems and increasing the production of decentralized renewable energy (families and small renewable energy companies) are also good measures to combat the energy crisis, Zero said.

These are measures that, he says, “could help Portugal reduce its energy consumption, ensuring not only the goal of solidarity with the countries of the European Union (EU), but also reducing the environmental impact of energy production and use.”

And they are not limited, according to the association, to large-scale information campaigns, advice and explanations, whether it is about how to make the house more comfortable and save energy, or how to be an energy producer. Whether it’s the importance, including in terms of energy, reducing food waste or taking a shorter shower.
