Underground gas levels in Portugal as of June 30 were around 103% of available annualized guaranteed commercial capacity, exceeding European Commission targets.
According to the Gas Infrastructure Utilization Bulletin issued by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), “the current value of gas stored in underground caverns is already above the 80% target (the 30 June ‘stock’ gas). 2022, this represented about 103% of the available guaranteed commercial capacity on an annualized basis).”
The goal in question relates to the European Union regulation on gas storage obligations, which includes a minimum filling of 90% of underground infrastructure, guarantees for countries without storage infrastructure and for countries with very significant storage volumes, as well as the possibility of achieving the filling goal. taking into account the “reserves” of stored liquefied natural gas, if the capacity exceeds 4% of the average annual consumption.
According to the bulletin, the Sines Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal had a peak load of 11 days in 2021, compared to six days in 2020 and two days in 2019.
This year, 3,521 tank cars were loaded in Sines in the first half of the year, transporting 1,613 GWh (gigawatt hours), which is 5.1% of total gas consumption or 13.5% of distribution consumption.
