Pollution: Fraud process on VW emissions scandal continues

For almost a year, attempts have been made in the Braunschweig Stadthalle to clear up diesel fraud at Volkswagen. However, the most recent development does not point to a breakthrough in the near future.

Is the criminal investigation of the VW diesel affair finally picking up speed? At least the first major fraud process for the emissions affair at Volkswagen should be continued on Tuesday (9.30 a.m.) in Braunschweig. Since a large proportion of the witnesses considered authoritative recently made use of their right to refuse to testify, individual prosecutors are now reporting on their own important witness hearings.

Nevertheless, the proceedings against four former executives of the car manufacturer have progressed extremely slowly in recent months. Corona-related failures and countless applications had repeatedly caused interruptions in the proceedings of the Braunschweig Regional Court.

The accused are accused, among other things, of commercial and gang fraud with deceptive programs in the exhaust gas control of millions of diesel cars. Negotiations have been going on in the Braunschweig Stadthalle for almost a year. The complex of negotiations against ex-CEO Martin Winterkorn was initially separated at the start on the basis of a medical report.

Winterkorn admitted the manipulation at Volkswagen in September 2015, but always shared responsibility. Shortly before, “Dieselgate” had been exposed in the USA by a letter from the environmental agency CARB. In the Braunschweig criminal trial, it was only clear that the previous scheduling until mid-2023 was not sufficient. The procedure is now expected to last until at least January 2024.
