The mayor of Seixal, Joaquim Santos (CDU), announced his resignation this Wednesday, almost a year after being re-elected, with the current vice president, Paulo Silva, taking charge of the municipality.
Joaquim Santos made the announcement on his Facebook page, explaining that he will end this phase of more than 20 years of local government exercise in order to return to his professional career, but that he will remain in office for some time to prepare for the transition . .
“I express here all my confidence in Dr. Paulo Silva, who will thus become the next mayor of Seixal, as well as all the advisers of the CDU and the workers accompanying us,” he said.
In a message addressed to the citizens, the communist mayor, who has chaired the Seixal city council since 2013, thanks them for the trust they have placed in the CDU municipal project in Seixal municipality, expressing appreciation to all the teams of elected officials and workers. with whom he interacted for more than 20 years of exercising local power.
“It was an extraordinary job to serve the citizens, but for me this stage will soon end, and I will be able to pursue my professional career,” he explained.
The mayor also thanks his party, the PCP, for “all the trust,” saying he would “gladly” accept new projects within the party.
“I will continue to be a PKP activist and I will have new tasks in my party. This is no longer a farewell to the mayor, I will continue for some time preparing a new action plan and budget for 2023 so that the transition occurs with all conditions, and this city council continues to work on the side of citizens, development and quality of life,” he said.
Joaquim Santos, a civil engineer by profession, was re-elected President of the Seixal City Council in September 2021 by the CDU for a third term.
The CDU also elected five terms without an absolute majority.
