Fast food chain: McDonald’s wants to reopen some branches in Ukraine

Big Macs and hamburgers are returning to Ukraine. MacDonald’s plans to reopen some of the closed restaurants. The first thing to do is to restore the supply chains.

Despite the ongoing Russian war of aggression, the US fast-food chain McDonald’s wants to reopen some of its restaurants in Ukraine.

“After long deliberations and discussions, we have a phased plan for resuming the work of some restaurants in Kyiv and western Ukraine,” the company said in a statement published on Facebook. In the coming months, work will be done to restore the supply chains and prepare the restaurants that were closed at the beginning of the war on February 24th. McDonald’s did not give an exact opening date.

The political leadership in Kyiv reacted promptly to the news. The head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak, posted fries and hamburger emojis on Twitter – along with a Ukrainian flag.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the reopening plan as a “political decision”. Millions of Ukrainians longed for the Big Macs, the 41-year-old wrote on Facebook. It is an important signal to the international economy, Kuleba added: “These are jobs and taxes for the Ukrainian budget, the survival of our economy in times of Russian aggression.”

Russia attacked Ukraine in late February. Many international companies had already left the Eastern European country in advance. In neighboring Russia, McDonald’s has gone out of business entirely.
