The tourism industry is slowly recovering from the corona pandemic. The numbers at the airports are also increasing again. This is also noticeable at the airport in Frankfurt.
Despite the chaos in handling, Frankfurt Airport was able to welcome more than 5 million passengers in one month for the first time since the outbreak of the Corona crisis. The 5.02 million passengers in July meant an increase of 76.5 percent compared to the same month last year, as the operator Fraport announced on Thursday. However, this was still 27.4 percent away from the values from the record year 2019.
Despite the lower number of passengers in comparison to the pre-crisis period, there had been considerable problems with the handling of the aircraft due to a lack of personnel, so that the flight schedule had to be thinned out as planned. In addition, an all-day warning strike at the main customer Lufthansa led to the loss of around 100,000 passengers.
In terms of freight volume, the largest German hub lost a good 18 percent of the volume compared to July 2021. Reasons were the closed airspace over Russia and Ukraine and the comprehensive corona protection measures in China.
