The washing machine is cheap – but how much electricity does the device use over the year? A new energy label will soon provide information when buying new electrical appliances and even with lighting.
From Wednesday on there will be new EU energy labels for other electrical appliances.
After classifications such as “A ++” for dishwashers, washing machines and televisions were gradually replaced at the beginning of March, it is now the turn of lightbulbs and other light sources. This emerges from a communication from the EU Commission.
There will also be a scale from red to green by means of which the energy efficiency of a device can be recognized. In future, however, lighting is also to be classified using the letters “A” for particularly economical devices and “G” for very energy-intensive lamps. A transition period of 18 months is planned for shops, and for online retail the labels must be replaced within 14 days.
The update will make it easier for consumers to see which products are the best in their class and thus help to save energy and money, said the EU Commissioner in charge, Kadri Simson, on Tuesday. The most energy-efficient products on the market are usually grouped into C and D because the requirements have become stricter.
