Tariffs: train drivers in Great Britain on strike – many train cancellations

UK train drivers are on strike, demanding more money. However, the government would have to take action because no appropriate offers can be made without its consent.

Due to a strike by several thousand train drivers, train passengers in Great Britain have to be prepared for numerous failures and disruptions this Saturday. Several train operators canceled their timetables completely, others only offered individual connections. The situation should only normalize over the course of Sunday.

The railways have been largely privatized in Great Britain since the 1990s, but the private operators have to comply with certain government regulations.

Train drivers’ union Aslef, which called for Saturday’s 24-hour strike, is in talks with employers to seek higher wages and is calling on the UK government to take action. The train companies could not offer decent wage increases without government approval. However, a spokesman for the British Department for Transport only called on workers and employers to come to an agreement so that passengers could travel without disruption.

Sales slumped in pandemic

Labor representative Steve Montgomery of Rail Delivery Group told the BBC it was willing to pay increases but sales had slumped during the pandemic. Reforms are necessary.

Other railway company employees have also gone on strike several times this summer and intend to do so again next week.

Aslef Secretary General Mick Whelan spoke of a “summer of solidarity” in which everyone shared their concerns with the government. The ruling Tory party and some media had previously spoken of a “summer of dissatisfaction” or “summer of disruption” because of the many strikes in a number of sectors. The candidates for the successor to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson want to significantly restrict the right to strike.
