Tank discount is coming to an end – how the fuel prices could continue

The three-month tank discount ends – that’s a fact. However, this raises the big question: What will happen next with petrol and diesel prices? There are several conceivable scenarios.

According to the plans of the Federal Ministry of Finance at the time, petrol was to be around 35 cents cheaper, diesel by almost 17 cents – each including the savings in VAT. In fact, fuel prices have fallen significantly since then. From September 1st, however, the reduction at the pump will no longer apply. Will fuel then become correspondingly more expensive after the end of the tank discount?

Experts do indeed believe that fuel prices will rise again. The price of oil has fallen in recent weeks, but fluctuates extremely, quotes the “FAZ” DZ Bank analyst Gabor Vogel. If the markets realized that, despite the economic slowdown in the United States and Europe, the current supply is basically insufficient and global inventories are scarce, price increases must be expected, Vogel said. The ADAC Hessen-Thüringen also considers a price increase at the beginning of September to be realistic.

So the question is when it will be. And so far it is not possible to say exactly. It is conceivable that the fuel price will already increase in the last week of August due to the sharp increase in demand before the tank discount is discontinued, as “Focus” reports. Because many motorists are likely to visit the gas station again before the tank discount ends.

According to Vogel, prices at gas stations could rise at the beginning of September. Finally, petrol station operators can also take advantage of the tank discount when purchasing petrol and diesel until August 31st, so that the reduced-price petrol will still be on sale in the period thereafter. Whether the gas stations will actually pass this on to their customers at the corresponding prices is another question. In addition to the elimination of the tank discount, crude oil prices also play a role.

At the beginning of the tank discount, the petrol stations and oil companies increased the fuel prices significantly, so that the liter price for petrol in June was still over two euros, diesel cost over 2.10 euros per liter. The prices then gradually fell. These are currently significantly lower. The ADAC announced on Wednesday that the nationwide average price per liter for diesel was 1.89 euros and was therefore 3.7 cents cheaper than in the previous week. The price of Super E10 fell by 2.5 cents in the same period and was around 1.71 euros.

Three possible scenarios after the end of the tank discount

According to “Focus”, three scenarios are possible with the elimination of the tank discount:

  1. Gasoline and diesel prices are scratching the two-euro mark, but aren’t getting more expensive than 2.10 euros.
  2. The price per liter for diesel rises to 2.10 euros and petrol to 2.15 euros per litre. This means that petrol would be more expensive than diesel again.
  3. However, prices could also rise further – to over 2.10 euros for a liter of diesel and over 2.20 euros for petrol. This would bring fuel prices back up to the level before the start of the tank discount.

It remains to be seen how much more petrol and diesel drivers will have to dig into their pockets once the tank discount is abolished.
