Government allocates 500,000 euros to farmers affected by fires

Agriculture Minister Maria do Seu Antunes announced this Saturday that 500,000 euros will be allocated to farmers affected by the fires, in accordance with a new government order.

“This order was signed yesterday [sexta-feira] and allocates 500 thousand euros to farmers affected by the fires to help them with animal feed. We are also distributing sugar to affected beekeepers in cooperation with the regional agricultural departments,” concluded the official at ExpoMocorvo, which takes place in Torre de Moncorvo.

On the other hand, Maria do Seu Antunes also said that the deadline was extended at the request of the confederations. [da lavoura]to allocate some 27 million euros to sectors such as pig, milk, poultry and egg production.

Maria do Seu Antunes also said that after working with the confederations, within the framework of rural development and with an amount from the state budget of about 57 million euros, support will be provided to various agricultural sectors, “whether it be horticulture, small-scale sheep farming, goats or cattle or to annual, permanent, rainfed or irrigated crops.

According to the minister, these are amounts that can help farmers in the post-COVID period, with the problem of drought or the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Another promise left by the minister is to bet on collective and more efficient irrigation in the Tras os Montes region, agreed with the local mayors.

In terms of support for local breeds, Maria do Seu Antunes has guaranteed that in the next investment cycle, producers will see an increase of around 60%.

“Aboriginal breeds are currently eligible for support of 15 euros per animal, which will be increased to 24 euros per head in the next investment cycle,” he said.

For the mayor of Torre de Moncorvo, Nuno Gonçalves, these measures, announced during Expomoncorvo, are welcome, “but they cannot be lost in the web of bureaucracy, as this is an area with an aging population.”

ExpoMoncorvo takes place over the weekend and draws hundreds of exhibitors with a focus on agriculture and local breeds.
