This complex is made up mainly of beans, chickpeas, peas and lentils. Their production is concentrated in the central and northwestern areas of the country, covering the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Córdoba and Santa Fe. The activity involves more than 3,726 total farms for the four crops.
As explained by the sector, regarding lentils, no significant quantities were directly exported in the first half of 2021, while this year the country added more than $7 million in that product.. Chickpeas totaled US$14.15 million in 2021, half the value shown in 2022. While beans, in all their varieties, produced US$87 million in the first six months of 2021, 32% lower at the current volume.
Meanwhile, in Argentina, the cultivation of beans is the most important within the production of legumes and is located in the NOA, with Salta being the main producing province. Almost 95% of this activity is oriented towards exports, due to the fact that internal consumption is 120 grams per capita per year, and it is carried out mainly during the autumn-winter months, coinciding with the months in which the harvest.
Unlike what happens with other bean producers worldwide, where they are also the main consumers; Argentina has the advantage of being one of the main exporters of beans in the southern hemisphere while the main suppliers of the world market, and the most important competitors, are in the northern hemisphere, which gives the country a strategic position in the conclave global.
Within this framework, as detailed by the Rosario Stock Exchange, Argentina is a medium-sized producer of legumes, with approximately 600,000 cultivated hectares and more than 660,000 projected tons of production, for an international market of 68 million tons of production and 12 million tons of trade.
“If we consider the last few years, the production of the complex in our country shows a positive trend. The estimated production for the 2021/22 cycle of peas, chickpeas and lentils is 58% higher than the immediately previous one. We are in a scenario of growth in all crops and in all indicators, which adds optimism to the market of this complex”, they detail from the entity.
Finally, regarding the 2022/23 campaign for both peas and chickpeas, it is estimated that the hectares planted in both crops will be greatly reduced by up to 50%, compared to the values obtained in the current cycle.
“Fortunately, world market prices have increased, so the total income of foreign currency is expected to compensate for the considerable drop in the area to be cultivated. In addition, there was a significant change in the destination channels where Argentina usually exports, increasing significantly in recent years.; and this is also due to the war in the Black Sea, since it represents an important market point for legumes, with Russia and Ukraine, for example, responsible for 22% of peas exports worldwide. This means that in the face of market opportunities, Argentine production and the new possibilities of diversifying shipments produce an interesting attraction for the promotion and growth of the Argentine complex”, they close from the entity from Rosario.
