Consumers will save almost 3.2 euros per bottle of gas for domestic consumption by setting maximum values that will take effect from Tuesday, the Lusa government said in a response.
The CEO returned this Friday to set maximum prices for bottled gas, as has already happened during the covid-19 pandemic, determining that a 13-kilogram (kg) bottle of butane gas will have a maximum price of €29.47 and €12 .5 kg. bottles will cost up to 28.34 euros, according to the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).
In the case of T3 propane LPG, the maximum ranges from 29.11 euros for an 11 kg bottle to 23.81 kg for a 9 kg bottle.
On the other hand, T5 LPG propane tanks will cost up to 109.08 euros (45 kg) or 84.84 euros (35 kg).
According to the data sent this Friday to Lusa by the Ministry of the Environment, these maximums, considering the prices announced in the first days of August, represent a savings of 3,180 euros per bottle in the case of T3 bottles of 13 kg.
With an 11 kg T3 propane tank, the savings are €3,258.
Already in a T5 cylinder with 45 kg of propane, the savings rise to 6,206 euros.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Control recalled that Law No. 69-А/2021 introduced the possibility of setting maximum marketing margins for simple fuels and for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in cylinders.
ERSE is responsible for setting a maximum margin for any commercial component that forms part of the sale price of bottled LPG to the public.
In turn, and after consultation with the Competition Authority, the government may, on an exceptional basis, set limits.
“Within this framework and on the basis of the proposal received from ERSE and the opinion of the Competition Authority and on its grounds, for reasons of public interest and in order to ensure the normal functioning of the market and the protection of consumer rights, the Government of Portugal considers that the implementation of the rules setting the maximum margin and the corresponding price for the sale of bottled LPG to the public seems justified for a limited period of time (until October 31, 2022),” he said.
In a diploma published in Diário da República, the executive noted that monthly fluctuations are calculated and published on the ERSE website, and that “delivery service costs” can only be added to these maximum prices if bottles are purchased by phone or electronically and be available elsewhere than the place of sale.
Supply stations and other points of sale of LPG cylinders must “guarantee a continuous supply” of cylinders, “namely those types covered by the fixed price”, as stated in the decree signed by the Ministers of Economy João Neves and for Environment and Energy, João Galamba.
The specified decree comes into force on Saturday, but the agreed maximum prices are effective from Tuesday.
