Swimming ban lifted from four out of five Matosinhos beaches

The regional health delegate has lifted the swimming ban on four of the five beaches in the municipality of Matosinhos, whose waters were banned on Thursday.

The ban on the use of water for bathing has been lifted on the beaches of Aterro, Boa Nova Senhora, Fuselhas and Lesa da Palmeira, but the ban on the use of the waters of Azul Conciha remains.

“From this date, I have determined the lifting of the ban on the use of bathing waters in the bathing waters of the municipality of Matosinhos: Aterro, Boa Nova Señora, Fuselhas and Lesa da Palmeira, maintaining the ban on those in Azul Conciña,” according to the announcement Regional Health Delegate sent to Lusa by the House of Matosinhos.

Beaches were closed on Thursday after the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) advised against swimming at five beaches in the municipality of Matosinhos following a fire at a paint factory in Lesa da Palmeira.

Swimming is advised to be avoided until “water analysis shows values ​​are within control parameters,” the National Maritime Administration (AMN) said in a statement Tuesday.

On Thursday, swimming was banned, according to Harbor Master Douro, Lusa said.

At 10:00 pm on Monday, APA and Matosinhos’ public health department were contacted following a fire that broke out in the early evening at a paint factory in Lesa da Palmeira.

The Matosinhos Civil Protection Service has alerted the authorities to the possibility of a source of pollution in the sea due to the rapid displacement of sewage through a rainwater system into a stream flowing into Praia Azul.

“After the alarm, units of the local command of the marine police and the captaincy of the port of Leishoynes, as well as the Northern Maritime Department, immediately arrived on the spot and discovered the presence of a source of pollution in the area. hard-to-reach places, and later a specialized company was called to collect polluting materials,” the AMN press release explains.

He added that the fire, which started around 7:45 p.m., was contained and extinguished on Monday afternoon by several fire brigades from Matosinhos, Gondomar and Maia.
