In other countries there have been vaccination lotteries for a long time – now a German lottery provider wants to motivate people to vaccinate with the chance of a big win. Addiction experts also see problems in this.
The vaccination rate should increase – this is what scientists and politicians are calling for in order to ensure greater protection against Covid-19 among the population. Since the purely health aspect does not seem to be sufficient as an argument for many, there are also financial incentives in some countries. Vaccination lotteries, for example, open up the possibility of a large monetary profit from a vaccination – for example in various states of the USA.
Financial incentives for corona vaccination have already been discussed in Germany, but these ideas have not yet been implemented. Now there is also the first vaccination lottery in this country: The Hamburg online lottery provider Lotto24 is giving away two million lottery tickets to people who have been vaccinated against corona. The main prize is a total of more than one million euros: 250,000 instant payment plus an additional 5,000 euros per month for 15 years.
Impflotterie beckons with a profit of more than one million euros
According to the provider, this would like to support the federal government’s vaccination campaign. “We all in Germany want the same thing: a winter without restrictions and a safe everyday life with friends and family,” said Marianna Herno, who is responsible for the campaign, in a press release. “According to a current survey by infratest / dimap, a quarter of the unvaccinated people questioned are simply undecided. With our campaign we want to create a further incentive to vaccinate. We are pleased if we can make a small contribution to the visibility of the federal government’s vaccination campaign.”
The campaign under the motto #geimpftgewinnt runs until September 30th. Anyone who has already been vaccinated or who has received their first corona vaccination by September 30th is allowed to participate.

Concerns from addiction professionals
With addiction experts, however, the action meets with concerns. “I find it questionable if an offer with a certain addictive potential is combined with the vaccination,” said Verena Küpperbusch, addiction expert at the state agency for gambling addiction in North Rhine-Westphalia, to the Funke newspapers. The Bremen addiction researcher Tobias Hayer classifies the risk of addiction in a one-off campaign as “low”: “Nobody will become addicted to the vaccination lottery as a result.” However, he added: “There is already a risk potential for vulnerable groups, for example those who have already gambled away a lot on other offers.”
