Logistics: Vienna: Transport companies plan to transport parcels by passengers

In order to save emissions, tram passengers in Vienna are to transport parcels in the future – initially in a test phase. However, it is still unclear how the passengers are to be compensated.

Parcels are also to be delivered by tram in Vienna in the future. In a test phase, passengers will probably be able to voluntarily take small shipments with them and drop them off at parcel stations from 2024.

This was announced by the research institute Fraunhofer Austria involved in the planning on Thursday. With the project, the municipal Wiener Linien and Austrian Post want to reduce traffic emissions.

In an online survey of around 6,000 people, around two-thirds were basically willing to take parcels with them on public transport, said Matthias Hayek from Fraunhofer Austria, which is part of the German Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The form in which passengers are compensated for their services and how many packages could be transported in this way has yet to be defined, Hayek told the German Press Agency. According to the Chamber of Commerce, 350,000 parcels were delivered in Vienna every day last year.
