Scope: What are the main needs and challenges of the sector in this economic moment that the country is going through?
Natalio Mario Grinman: We are not in the best moment in Argentina, there are many problems and for us as businessmen our task is to generate wealth and jobs. If someone points to businessmen as being responsible for the decline of our country, they are totally wrong. Entrepreneurs need a business climate and predictability to invest. I give an example, Chile has an average of 55 companies per thousand inhabitants, Brazil 26 companies per thousand inhabitants and in Argentina we only have 13 companies per thousand inhabitants. If we had what Brazil has, instead of having 600 thousand companies here in the country we would have 1,200,000. Now the question is, why do we have the fewest companies per capita? and the answer is that Argentina does not generate a business climate or confidence in entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs need clear rules of the game, so it is enough to stigmatize entrepreneurs. If there are bad businessmen, surely there are bad trade unionists and bad politicians, and Justice has the tools to go looking for them and punish them.
Scope: In this scenario, is inflation a problem?
Natalio Mario Grinman: Obviously, inflation is a problem for everyone, especially those who have the least. The exchange gap is a problem, the stocks on imports, on exports. Measures must be found that encourage the entrepreneur, the producer, primary production, secondary production, tertiary production, so that they do what they know how to do, which is to generate work.
Ámbito: And the exchange rate?
Natalio Mario Grinman: There is a tremendous gap, obviously he is behind. These are issues that the government has to deal with because devaluation, while necessary, can be dangerous if it is not carried out with a coherent plan.
Ámbito: What did you think of Sergio Massa’s first steps?
Natalio Mario Grinman: We have known Sergio for a long time, he is a very intelligent politician and he has taken on a great responsibility by leaving a zone of great comfort like the Chamber of Deputies to sit in the electric chair that is the Ministry of Economy, that is, he must be very sure of what you want to do. And the first announcements are in line with what we have been saying, which is to lower public spending, reduce the fiscal deficit, increase the reserves of the Central Bank. They were announcements, we have to see if they can materialize because the expectation does not last long in this country.
Criticism of trade unionism and social plans
During his presentation at the nineteenth edition of the Council of the Americas, Grinman questioned the “wrong policies” that caused “many Argentines to live off the handout” from the government.
“The wrong policies in our country have led to many citizens not studying or working, and living off the handouts of the government in power,” he questioned.
In addition, he complained about the social protests that took place on Wednesday, stating: “We understand the need to express oneself, but it must be done while respecting the right of those who want to travel and work. Order is essential and we urge the authorities.”
