“It was as if you were allowed to look into the book of geological history,” says Ulla Lohmann today: How a fossil find shaped an entire life.
Recorded by Doris Schneyink
When I was 15, I really wanted to take part in a dig for fossils in the Palatinate. I’ve always been fascinated by what’s in the ground, what secrets it hides. I annoyed the responsible taxidermist at the museum in Bad Dürkheim until he finally said yes. I owe it more to coincidence that I made a great find: I climbed onto a stone slab and a piece broke off. At first I was ashamed and thought, ouch, now you’ve broken something too.
