Six weeks vacation: How the Bauhaus fished for employees

From the buyer to the product and data manager for the online shop to employees for customer service, controlling and IT system administration: the Bauhaus DIY chain with its Austrian headquarters in Wels has currently advertised around 100 jobs. Managing director Heinz Reithner says that filling positions has long since ceased to be a sure-fire success: “Candidates want to be wooed, and to do that you have to break new ground.”

For this reason, the Bauhaus now offers every employee more free time and has increased vacation time from five to six weeks. The regulation applies to everyone who has been in the company for at least one year. Before that, the sixth week of vacation was only for those who had worked in the company for at least 25 years.

Satisfied employees are the best advocates, says Reithner: In addition to flexible working hours, performance bonuses, social benefits, discounted shopping and further training programs are also offered.

The Austrians have used the two years since the outbreak of the corona pandemic to renovate and beautify, says Reithner: However, the good demand has exacerbated the shortage of workers. Bauhaus has been represented in Austria for 50 years. 1700 employees work in 20 stores, including 100 apprentices. Group-wide there are 270 locations in 19 countries.

As reported, Bauhaus is investing ten million euros in a new service center in Wels. This is where the threads for all Austrian branches come together. E-charging stations for cars and bikes and a fitness room for employees are planned.
