Japan encourages young people to drink alcohol to ‘fat off’ tax revenue

Japan wants to find a solution to increase tax revenue and stimulate the country’s economy in a drink bar.

The Japan Tax Authority has launched a campaign called “Viva o Sake”, which encourages young people aged 20 to 39 to come up with projects that encourage the consumption of alcoholic beverages, from beer to wine, while not forgetting traditional Japanese sake.

Once the proposals are received, they will be judged by an independent jury and once approved they will be funded by the government. Projects can go both through the physical plane and through the metaverse. Artificial intelligence is not excluded. Proposals can be submitted until September.

“The domestic market for alcoholic beverages is shrinking due to demographic changes, such as falling birth rates and an aging population, as well as lifestyle changes caused by the pandemic,” the tax authority warns, citing the Spanish newspaper Five Days.

Nearly a third (29%) of the Japanese population aged 65 and over is the highest proportion in the world.

Over the past 40 years, the income of the Japanese tax authorities from taxes on alcohol has declined sharply. If in 1980 5% of tax revenue came from this type of taxation, then in 2020 only 1.7% of the total came from taxes on alcoholic beverages, according to The Japan Times.
