A start-up in St. Marienkirchen near Schärding has poured the tailwind that the legislator has been giving company bicycles through tax advantages into a business model since the end of 2020. It’s called LeaseMyBike and is run by the couple Ann-Kathrin and Gerhard Mayrhofer. They digitally simplified what was complicated for some employers.
Because many shy away from a “salary conversion” of the bike purchase price into monthly installments that are deducted from the gross wage and reduce the wage tax assessment basis. “We make things easy,” says Gerhard Mayrhofer. Contracts, signatures and insurance are processed digitally, nothing has to be printed out.
Employees choose their company bike (which can be used privately) from one of 200 dealers. The monthly leasing rate, which is deducted from the gross salary, is calculated online. The bike is paid off after 36 or 48 months. With a tax tailwind, it will be around a third cheaper because the bike is not treated as a benefit in kind. If the employee changes, the bike can be taken with the contract or returned to the dealer. “No employer is stuck with costs or wheels,” says Mayrhofer. LeaseMyBike lives on commissions. One customer is FACC, where 150 bikes are already being leased. “It’s good for health, the environment and employee loyalty,” says Jürgen Fischer, head of the employee works council.
