Year-on-year comparison: Natural gas consumption in industry fell in July

Compared to the average value of previous years, industry in Germany was able to save significantly on natural gas in July. This gives hope in the face of an impending gas emergency.

The natural gas consumption of industrial customers in Germany in July was around 21.3 percent below the July average for the years 2018 to 2021. This was announced by the Federal Network Agency on Thursday in its latest gas management report. In June the value was 13.6 percent and in May 11.6 percent below the four-year average.

“The decline in gas consumption in industry shows that we can manage to avert a gas emergency,” said Klaus Müller, President of the German Press Agency. “As painful as the tremendously high prices and savings may be, a real gas shortage would be even more severe.”

In the future, the authority wants to publish data on gas consumption in industry every Thursday. In addition to the weekly values, the percentage decrease in consumption should be shown on a monthly basis. A presentation of the gas consumption of household customers is also being prepared.

contribution of households

“Households cannot make a major contribution to savings at the moment given the summer temperatures,” Müller continued. When it gets colder, it also depends on the households. “Whoever saves gas will also save money and help to avoid a gas shortage.”

As the Federal Network Agency further reported, the gas storage facilities are now around 81 percent full. On October 1st the filling level should be at least 85 percent, on November 1st at least 95 percent. “The storage levels are also on the right track,” said Müller. “We must not let up our efforts here so that we can go into the winter with well-stocked storage facilities.”
