Government extends until August 31 compensation for energy costs for fisheries and aquaculture

The government will extend the energy cost compensation period for the fisheries and aquaculture sector until August 31, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced on Thursday.

An extension to the support regime created to compensate fisheries and aquaculture operators for additional energy costs was published this Thursday in Diário da República.

In this regard, the regime is extended until the end of the month, creating two compensation periods: from February 24 to June 30 of the current year and from July 1 to August 31 of the same year.

“The support provided is aimed at operators of fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing and wholesale trade in these products and takes the form of a non-refundable subsidy in the form of fixed amounts or an amount calculated on the basis of a flat rate of 30% of the average monthly electricity costs for 2019,” — the ministry said in a statement.

In Portugal, “fisheries and aquaculture are among the 15 most energy dependent sectors, being the sector that has a large weight in the cost of direct and indirect energy consumption,” the statement said.

The July 18 amendment to the European Marine and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) regulation “aims to support specific measures to mitigate the impact of market shocks caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine on the fisheries supply chain.” and aquaculture.
