The government reiterates that Endesa misled the Portuguese by promoting the idea of raising electricity prices.

The government confirmed this Thursday that President Endesa Portugal misled the Portuguese by promoting the idea of higher electricity prices due to the Iberian mechanism, but noted that it never indicated that the price would not rise.

This was announced at the end of July by the President of Endesa Portugal Nuno Ribeiro da Silva in an interview with the publication business magazine and antenna 1that electricity will increase by about 40% already in July bills.

“President Endesa was wrong. He made a message that misled the Portuguese. First, because he promoted the idea of a general increase for families and consumers,” said Duarte Cordeiro, speaking at a press conference in Lisbon.

However, the official noted that “being wrong” does not mean that there are no price increases in the wholesale market.

However, he stressed that if consumers do not find cheaper electricity offers, they can always choose a regulated tariff.

Duarte Cordeiro also stressed that President Endesa was wrong to “think that this increase was due to the Iberian mechanism” when it led to a decrease in the impact of the increases.

According to the official, this reduced electricity prices by about 17% compared to the values without its introduction.

On July 31, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action had already dismissed “alarmist statements” by President Endesa, stressing that it saw “no justification” for this increase and that there were other suppliers on the open market.

A day later, the electricity company committed to maintaining the negotiated prices until December and fulfilling the obligations set out in the Iberian Mechanism.
