This emerges from the figures that Statistics Austria presented yesterday. According to this, the beds were made 37 million times in the first half of the summer season from May to the end of July. That is only 4.6 percent fewer overnight stays than in the same period of 2019 (38.8 million overnight stays).
There were huge shifts within the countries of origin of the guests. Long-distance travel is not yet at the level before Corona. Especially Asians are missing. In the three-month period covered, 24.8 million overnight stays came this year, around two-thirds from “abroad”.
Better short-distance than long-distance travel
However, at 84.4 percent, most of them are holidaymakers from the EU. Because foreign guests are still missing 8.8 percent or 2.4 million vacation days to get back to where they used to be. Mr. and Mrs. Austrians, on the other hand, increasingly used the beauties of the country for recreation. Overnight stays by domestic guests increased by 5.2 percent from May to July.
“After two difficult summers for tourism, the first half of the season was again full of overnight stays,” says Statistics Austria boss Tobias Thomas.
