During the Corona lockdowns, camping in Germany was the only way for many to go on vacation. The caravan industry is booming. This also benefits the economy.
The trend towards camping holidays is continuing: According to industry information, around two million newcomers have found “mobile leisure” in the past two years.
Around 14 million people are now vacationing in Germany with caravans, mobile homes or vans, said the President of the Caravaning Industry Association, Hermann Pfaff, on Friday before the opening of the Caravan Salon trade fair for trade visitors in Düsseldorf. The number of recreational vehicles registered in Germany is at a record high.
The leading trade fair for mobile homes and caravans opens its doors to the public this Saturday (27 August). 736 exhibitors from 34 countries will be presenting their innovations in Düsseldorf until September 4th. The organizers expect around 200,000 visitors.
State Secretary Michael Kellner (Greens) emphasized in a video message that climate and environmental protection are becoming increasingly important. Now is the time to position yourself for the future. Camping tourism is particularly dependent on an intact environment.
Camping promotes the local economy
Pfaff referred to a study according to which camping holidaymakers generate annual sales of over 15 billion euros for the domestic economy. “Around 4.5 billion euros stay directly in the holiday areas and benefit the regional industries,” he said.
Despite the boom, manufacturers are also struggling with supply chain problems and corona staff shortages. As a result, numerous German companies had to temporarily reduce their production of motorhomes in the first half of the year. Motorhome production fell by 11.6 percent to 39,472 vehicles. On the other hand, caravan production increased by 23 percent to 30,258 units. “The manufacturers reacted quickly to the lack of vehicle chassis in the motorhomes and increasingly focused their production on the caravan,” it said.
