The length of a working life in Europe also depends on the economic and social structures of the respective countries. This leads to clear differences in the length of working lives, as the Statista chart shows.
According to a Eurostat forecast, the average working life in the EU is 36 years. The prediction is based on the population of adults aged fifteen or older in 2021.
Within the European Union, the figures range from 31 years in Romania to almost 42.5 years in the Netherlands. In Germany, a 15-year-old can expect an estimated 39 years on the European labor market.

On average, we work 3.6 years longer than we did 20 years ago
On average, EU residents work about 3.6 years longer than they did 20 years ago. Hungary has recorded the highest increase since 2001 – working life lasts an average of 8.5 years longer for Hungarians than before.
Eurostat has also collected data on countries outside the EU. Working life in Turkey is relatively short at 33.8 years, while in Iceland it is the longest of all countries at 44.6 years.
