Poll: Majority for higher spending on public infrastructure

The pandemic has shown that there is a lot missing in some areas of infrastructure. The population wants more investment. There are regional differences, especially between town and country.

According to a survey, the majority of people in Germany are dissatisfied with the public infrastructure in the Federal Republic.

The situation in the areas of education, health and care as well as environmental protection is assessed particularly critically, according to a representative survey published on Monday by the Institute for Macroeconomics and Business Cycle Research (IMK) of the trade union-affiliated Hans Böckler Foundation. On average across Germany, a good two-thirds of those surveyed called for higher government investment.

Those surveyed saw by far the greatest need in the areas of health and education. Here, 87 and 79 percent of those surveyed spoke out in favor of higher spending. 70 percent supported more investment in climate and environmental protection.

However, there were significant regional differences. According to the survey, the desire for improvements in health care was even higher in rural areas than in the city. City dwellers, on the other hand, expressed a desire for greater investment in climate and environmental protection more frequently. Public safety played a greater role in the new federal states, climate protection less so. In the West it was exactly the opposite. People in North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein and Rhineland-Palatinate saw the greatest need for investment.
