Brunner suspects speculative business at Wien Energie

Brunner called for rapid clarification on the part of the City of Vienna and Wien Energie.

The 2 billion euros urgently demanded by City Councilor Peter Hanke (SPÖ) had been negotiated overnight without a result, and the talks would continue this morning, according to Brunner. In any case, the money cannot be transferred without collateral, since enormous sums are involved. “The dimensions are huge,” said the finance minister.

He does not know whether any money that may have been granted could flow back quickly, as some people have promised. Brunner also has to question Vienna’s argument that they were informed about the situation at short notice – overnight. “Many experts say it should have been seen earlier,” says Brunner.

Brunner, however, continued to support the promised aid. “We don’t leave the Viennese out in the rain.” He does not believe that other companies could be affected. According to the information he currently has, this is not the case.

Brunner is reluctant to consider a possible rescue package for the entire industry, which is similar in Germany. “We’ll look at that with the branches.” However, the minister explained that the speculative transactions suspected at Wien Energie would not be included.
