The first routes will be to Brasilia, Fortaleza, Joao Pessoa, Porto Alegre, Recife, São Luis, Teresina and Vitoria. Most flights will operate through the night and dawn to make deliveries early in the day.
Fernando Yunes, Senior Vice President of Mercado Libre in Brazil said: “The first flights will be destined for the cities of Fortaleza, São Luís and Teresina, where the current four-day delivery period (via ground transportation) will be reduced to just one day, considering the loads stored in Fulfillment. We will reduce delivery time by up to 80%. This is the realization of our purpose of fast delivery and democratization of trade throughout the country”, he completed.
The initiative is part of the investment package of R$17 billion (US$3 billion) that Mercado Libre announced for this year in Brazil.
Through this alliance with Gol, the company founded by Argentinean Marcos Galperín plans to multiply its package delivery capacity from 10 million to 40 million per year.
Mercado Libre already has an alliance for air distribution of goods with Sideral Linhas Aereas and Azul, but it does so with small planes and limited travel. For this reason, the company’s authorities clarified that despite the new agreement they will maintain the operation with Sideral and Azul for short-distance deliveries.
The benefits of the new agreement not only favor Mercado Libre, since with the joint operations Gol foresees the creation of 100 direct jobs and another 90 indirect jobs to start up the entire structure of its logistics and cargo division.
