the UIA suspended the celebration and asked that there be no leap into the void

Funes de Rioja also spoke that the news surprised them: “We are older than the average age and in almost 40 years of democracy, in which we lived through very difficult times for the country, which we considered to be over. What happened last night was a leap into the past, but I hope it’s not a leap into the void.”

The UIA expected a historic act of celebration for the Day of Industry. Unlike last year, where there was no front-line official, this year they had the confirmation of President Alberto Fernández, along with the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro, and the president of YPF, Pablo González. The celebration in what they call the “capital of Vaca Muerta” had been designed to put the deposit in the center, highlight that its growth could be a “before and after” for the country, and ask for special laws and incentives, both tax, taxes and access to foreign exchange.

However, the officials canceled the presence after what happened. On the contrary, this Friday morning Funes de Rioja spoke by WhatsApp with Julio Vitobello, secretary of the president, who summoned him for a meeting at Casa Rosada, along with other business leaders, unions and even the Church. For this reason, as soon as the words of Governor Gutiérrez, the last speaker, concluded, the industrial leadership did not stay for lunch and left in a private plane for the City of Buenos Aires.

On stage, Funes explained why they decided not to suspend the act: “What happened yesterday, I hope will never happen again. We don’t deserve such a serious occurrence. We cannot give space to the slightest doubt that all of Argentina is united in this sentiment. Our duty as business leaders is to make efforts to care for democracy, peace and life, and that is why we are here”.

The last speaker of the brief meeting was Governor Gutierrez, who also referred to the attack on the vice president: “Consensus and agreements are what make it possible to pacify and generate development. Yesterday God took care of the life of the vice president and the health of the people, and of the province. In addition, she rejected some repercussions and asked for clarification: “I heard that they said that we only rejected because it was violence against a policy, but what we want is to live in harmony. Also that when she passed by she kept walking, but when we are with so many people we don’t have a complete awareness of the facts. Others are already asking for resignations, but that is the consequence: now is the time to respect the judicial process and for politics to unite”.

In addition, he made reference to the energy sector, an issue that should have dominated the meeting: “Yesterday’s announcement of the YPF-Petrona agreement is not a mirror of colors. It is very important to generate more development. Vaca Muerta is going to give scale and potential to the industry”. Behind the scenes, mounted in a tent in the industrial park, was a giant drilling rig for oil and gas fields.

On the other hand, the governor anticipated that he will be present on Tuesday in a meeting that the UIA will hold at the headquarters of the City of Buenos Aires. There they will seek to reissue the event that was cut short this Friday. A discussion called “Vaca Muerta and the Argentine energy and industrial transformation” was scheduled to take place, where representatives of YPF, Pan American Energy and Tecpetrol were going to participate.
