ÖBB and Siemens Mobility, together with Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), presented the new generation of Nightjet sleeping and couchette cars in Vienna-Simmering. The ÖBB promised that the cars would have a modern design, more comfort and increased privacy. By the end of 2025, 33 new-generation ÖBB Nightjets will be on rails, connecting European cities at speeds of up to 230 km/h.

Mini cabins as a “special highlight”
The first trains are to be used on the connections from Austria and Germany to Italy at the end of summer 2023. “Anyone who travels by night train chooses the most relaxed form of travel and makes an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. Compared to a plane, a journey with the Nightjet is around 50 times more climate-friendly,” emphasized Gewessler. “The interior of the new generation of Nightjets will offer our passengers a new travel experience,” promised ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä. Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock of Siemens Mobility, pointed out the additional privacy: “A special highlight in the interior are the innovative mini cabins, which offer the passengers a private sphere of retreat.”
Four-seater compartment in a couchette car
The seven-car Nightjets of the new generation each consist of two seating cars (control car and multi-function car), three couchette cars and two sleeping cars. The maximum total capacity per set is 254 seats. With a lower occupancy (two-person compartment in the sleeping car, four-person compartment in the couchette car) and the new mini cabins for single travelers, the ÖBB want to meet the customers’ desire for increased privacy.
