The current draft of the EEC stipulates that the construction of new liquid gas heating systems would be banned from 2023 and existing systems would have to be shut down by 2025. “We’re being thrown into the same pot as heating oil,” says Gerhard Ölsinger, Chairman of the Association for Liquid Gas in Austria (ÖVFG).
LPG is significantly more climate-friendly than heating oil, comparable to natural gas, which is likely to be used for heating purposes for much longer, according to ÖVFG Managing Director Ulrike Andres.
Liquid gas (propane and butane) does not come from Russia, but accumulates in refineries, including those of OMV in Schwechat, as soon as they are fully operational again. In addition, the industry is trying to replace the fossil liquefied gas with renewable gas, such as biogas, and is on the right track, according to the head of the association, Ölsinger.
