Dialogue with the Fund was put on track

“There was very little dialogue at the Guzmán level with other important actors in Washington, such as the presidents of the multilaterals, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the White House, the Treasury Department,” he added.

In this sense, the financial market executive stressed that “as the dialogue is better, things are unlocked“, like the IDB credit, announced by Massa himself last week.

This led to the belief that the goals are going to be agreed upon, that there is going to be an approval by the Fund and the Board of Directors of the Fund on the agreed goals.“, he pointed out.

In any case, for Timerman there was “something that was very important and that went more or less unnoticed here, which is that Massa did not ask for the goals to be changed either.”

“Many times in Argentina we try to see the benefits of what could become, ‘Well, there was a war, change my goals’ -he said hypothetically-, and those types of requests that create certain conflicts, do not bring the benefits that we think they are going to bring because, although you improve some variables, you harm others,” he explained.

With which, confirmed the financier, “it was a productive trip”, and “the economic team that Massa led was solid and that is also respected from the point of view of the interlocutors”.

About it, Timerman predicted that “we are going to see the benefits of knowing that it is one more step in this strategy of putting out fires“.

Finally, the financier highlighted the importance of the series of meetings held by the head of the Palacio de Hacienda.

“When an economy minister goes to Washington, he stays a week and has meetings with the White House, with the State Department, with businessmen, with officials from the Fund and the World Bank, and then, at the end of the tour, he has a meeting at the Treasury, that had an impact on the dialogue and on the decision of the secretary of the American Treasury (Janet Yellen) to go on to speak and bless what is happening,” he concluded.
