The meeting took place within the framework of Expo Prado 2022, one of the most important agricultural exhibitions in the world, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) said in a statement.
The session was attended by the Minister of Agriculture of Paraguay, Santiago Bertoni; his peer from Chile, Esteban Valenzuela; the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos; the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina, Juan José Bahillo; the Secretary of Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil, Jean Marcel Fernández; and the official of the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands of Bolivia, Dedy González. The Director General of IICA, Manuel Otero, was also present, since his institute is the Executive Secretary of the CAS.
In a consensual and joint statement, the authorities pointed out that “despite not being the main responsible for climate change, the CAS countries contribute significantly to global food security. This has been possible thanks to progress in building a agricultural sector that has developed the state and private institutions necessary for innovation and the development of technologies applied to the sector and human capital in accordance with these new challenges imposed by climate change”.
In this sense, they highlighted that “in order to continue providing the world with healthy, safe, nutritious and sustainable food, we ratify our priority commitment in terms of sustainable production and adaptation, as key work areas”.
They then stated that “CAS Member Countries, as developing countries, urge increased funding to support national efforts on climate action, always respecting the priorities and needs of the country adopting the measures.”
And they added that “we urge developed countries to adopt substantive and operational commitments in terms of financing, mainly for investments that allow adaptation in agriculture and rural infrastructure, as well as in research, technology transfer and training.”
