Electric car manufacturer: Tesla plans further battery factory in Germany

The Tesla battery factory in Grünheide near Berlin is already in place. When exactly it starts there is open. Tesla initially puts manufacturing in the USA at the top. The reason is simple.

The US electric car manufacturer Tesla continues to rely on battery production in Germany – but is prioritizing the USA for the time being because of the prospect of tax incentives. The company made this clear to partners in the Grünheide region near Berlin on Friday. When asked, Tesla did not comment.

The so-called anti-inflation law by US President Joe Biden means that Tesla wants to ramp up battery production at the Austin plant in Texas faster than planned. This can be supported from Germany with the delivery of parts and engineers. The concrete schedule for the factory in Grünheide is open.

Ideally, both battery factories would be ramped up as quickly as possible, the company clarified. The new law means that cell production in the USA has priority and there is an even greater economic interest in starting your own battery production faster. Tesla emphasizes that it is not the only company to make such a decision – but maybe the first. The high energy prices in Europe therefore have nothing to do with it, because production with dry electrodes is very efficient.

Production in Grünheide since March

Electric cars have been produced in the Tesla factory in Grünheide since it opened on March 22nd. The construction of the battery factory is well advanced. Tesla boss Elon Musk announced almost two years ago that he also wanted to make the plant near Berlin the world’s largest battery factory. The Brandenburg state government made it clear on Thursday that it was still assuming production in Grünheide and had no other signals.

In August, the US Parliament passed a bill to invest billions in climate protection and the social sector with financial incentives for the construction of plants for electric cars and battery production, among other things. If battery modules are built, a subsidy of 45 dollars per kilowatt hour can beckon. A study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance found that lithium-ion batteries would average $137 per kilowatt-hour in 2021.

Own battery factory for VW

Tesla rival Volkswagen laid the foundation stone for its own battery factory in Salzgitter in Lower Saxony in July. According to an analysis by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, a quarter of the predicted European production capacities for battery cells could be covered by Germany by the end of the decade.

Last year, Tesla waived possible state subsidies in the billions for battery production in Germany. Certain conditions must be met for such funding. According to Tesla, this waiver has nothing to do with the current decision to prioritize the USA for funding.
