Van Moof builds e-bikes based on the Apple principle. The big goal of founder Taco Carlier: outdo the car industry – and get a billion people on bikes.
Taco Carlier obviously doesn’t like what he sees. The 44-year-old Dutchman is standing in a square in Berlin-Mitte, hands on hips, frowning, examining his bike shop. From the outside, the store looks like a small Apple Store. Floor-to-ceiling windows, interior made of light wood and concrete, minimalist furnishings. It should be inviting – and not too bustling. But currently more than a dozen black e-bikes lined up closely together block the shop window. Inside, too, the store is bursting at the seams. “It’s just too full. With people, but also with wheels,” complains the entrepreneur.
