Shipping: solar sails and electric boats – Interboot trade fair started

What does the future of shipping look like? There is a small insight at the water sports fair Interboot. Exhibitors will show, among other things, ideas for the drives of the future.

The water sports trade fair Interboot on Lake Constance started with a focus on sustainable drives. According to the organizers, 348 exhibitors want to show solar systems for sailing yachts and electric wooden boats there by September 25th. Options for converting from combustion engines to electric motors will also be presented in the so-called “Green Area”. “There was a lot going on this morning,” a spokeswoman summed up the start. There is the usual crowd.

For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, there will be comprehensive test offers for visitors at Interboot. Among other things, there is a test pool for stand-up paddles and driver training with boat trailers. Last year more than 45,000 people visited the water sports fair. The organizers did not want to give any estimates of how many there could be this year.

According to the government of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, most boats on Lake Constance have been powered by combustion engines. At the end of 2020, more than 61,600 boats were registered on Lake Constance, more than half of them (around 38,500) with combustion engines. Just under 2,000 boats had electric drives, plus more than 15,000 sailing boats and almost 6,000 boats without motors.
