Governor Gildo Insfrán confirmed the discovery of lithium reserves

From September 26 to 30, the governors of the Norte Grande will go to the United States on a trade mission with the intention of seeking investments and planning actions that help the development of the 10 provinces that comprise it, the context in which this announcement was made. .

Lithium and opportunities

Lithium carbonate is considered one of the main inputs in the world in the energy transition process, since it is used for electric vehicle batteries and as a backup for the stability of renewable energies, among other widespread storage uses. energetic.

The ore, depending on its quality, is also used to produce batteries for laptops, telephones, digital cameras, pacemakers, toys and watches, reaching a wide variety of industries.

“Recent studies have confirmed the presence of lithium in the hydrocarbon areas of western Formoseño,” the Formoseño governor said on his Twitter account.

The provincial president added that “this valuable resource opens up great possibilities for investment and production in the province, since lithium is a key element for technological and energy development worldwide.”

“In this sense, we are advancing in different research areas to evaluate lithium carbonate production alternatives in our territory, together with the construction of a pilot extraction plant as a preliminary step for future industrial plants,” he added.

Formosa has six defined oil areas and the discovery of the mineral opens up a range of possibilities in terms of energy and investment for the province.

Likewise, the alternatives for the production of lithium carbonate in the territory and the construction of a Pilot Extraction Plant are investigated, as the previous one to future industrial plants.

In this sense, Refsa and the technological research and development company Y-Tec signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the end of August to develop a work proposal to be able to obtain this lithium from the water and proceed with its industrialization at source.

Y-Tec President, Robert Salvarezzaaffirmed that “interesting lithium levels” were detected in the water used for the secondary recovery process of the mature oil wells of the El Palmar field, where it is presumed that “the geological formation has volcanic components with a high mineral concentration”. currently in demand.”

Memorandum

Salvarezza -in dialogue with Télam- explained that The memorandum proposes as the first axis of collaboration the development of direct extraction procedures – different from the technique that is carried out in the Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy salt flats to obtain lithium – for which the province plans to build a plant to the use of this saline water.

In addition to collaborating in this aspect, Y-Tec is interested in studying the purification stages of lithium carbonate, and from there, advancing in the possibility that the province has the technology under development in the country for the production of lithium cells that make up the heart of batteries for storage of electrical energy.

Salvarezza assured that “there is literature studying the possibility of obtaining lithium from the water associated with oil production” and even Y-Tec has been carrying out in the last four years “analyses of salinized water that is used in mature reservoirs of other basins but with results very low lithium levels.

The Formosa experience “represents an important technological challenge both for the technique of direct extraction of the resource and for accompanying the industrialization process, first with the purification of the ore and then with the transfer to the province of the battery manufacturing capacity.”
