Given this situation, the CAA expressed its “enormous concern” about the economic and social consequences that this phenomenon could generate” in the country, because it would affect “the functioning of agricultural, agro-industrial value chains and mainly regional economies.”
“One of the most affected areas continues to be the provinces of northeastern Argentina (NEA), where yerba mate, citrus and forestry productions are still recovering from the fires and extreme drought that made headlines at the beginning of the year,” said the business entity .
“In the center of the country, the production of legumes, flowering for honey production, and the availability of pasture for some dairy basins has been a critical point,” the document added.
For its part, in the Cordilleran area “the availability of water for irrigation also continues to be scarce, which is why potential productive yields are of concern, as well as the increase in energy costs required for its management,” warned the CAA.
Given this scenario, they warned “about the serious consequences that the presence of a third consecutive Nina could have on the grain harvest, meat and milk production, and regional economies.”
Therefore, they warned that if there are no rains in the short term, the losses in production will seriously affect the agro-industrial companies.
Finally, they pointed out that “scenarios such as the current one highlight the need to develop a comprehensive policy for managing the risks faced by these productions, with an Agricultural Insurance Law and the update of the Agricultural Emergency Law among its priorities”.
